WAG THE DOGBAMA?

Would Obama initiate a preemptive attack on Iran to help his ratings and advance his domestic agenda?

Maybe...

Would he delay a preemptive attack on Iran to help his ratings and advance his domestic agenda?

Maybe...

I have zero confidence in him as our CiC.
  • IF OBAMA ORDERS AN EFFECTIVE STRIKE ON IRAN, THEN I WILL SUPPORT OBAMA.
  • IF ISRAEL DOES, THEN I EXPECT THE USA TO DEFEND ISRAEL - AND IF WE DON'T I WILL ATTACK OBAMA.
The clock is ticking...

DRUDGE is now running this headline:
AHMADINEJAD: 'Iran will deliver telling blow to global powers on Feb. 11'...
And last week - ON TUESDAY - we posted on the fact that Merkel suggested that February was a deadline for Iran.

The clock is ticking...

If Obama attacks Iran - and attacks this month, I think it is for cause, not politics.

And we should support him in the effort - and yet not let that sweep aside our very deep differences with is socialistic agenda.

The Iranian islamo-tyrants probably think that Obama wouldn't dare attack them now because he's an appeaser and an attack could send the world economy down the tubes.

But they are wrong: I think a swift and massive attack would be effective and I think that the world will no more go into a tailspin after an attack on Iran than after Israel's attack on Syria's clandestine nuclear site.

In fact, the entire Arab world - sans Hamas and Hizballah and Syria - will sigh with relief. and give thanks in secret.

Alternatives ...

Is it even remotely possible that Osama bin Laden is bored with waging violent jihad? He has been assigned such acclaim for his stellar role in enthusing the brotherhood of Islamic jihadists to embrace their role as human missiles one wonders at the potential for a sense of ennui overtaking his passionate soul.

One supposes that if one devotes one's time to an unwavering symbolic gesture it becomes tedious from overuse. So it must be with Osama bin Laden, judging by his latest communique. Who would've guessed it? It must be abundantly clear by now that this man is no news recluse; he obviously keeps abreast of the world's concerns.

And if it is anthropogenic environmental change of a truly disastrous variety, why then he would like a little bit of the action. Move over, Al Gore, you've a competing environmentalist breathing fire and brimstone at your doorstep. Mind, his accommodations likely are more reflective of those of a committed environmentalist, as opposed to your opulent digs.

It's entirely possible that Mr. bin Laden feels rather resentful that one of his world stature received no invitation to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos . His presence most certainly would have added a frisson of excitement. He could have stood up there at the lectern: "All industrial nations mainly the big ones, are responsible for the crisis of global warming."

Which he did anyway, but it was aired on Al Jazeera instead, a more accommodating venue, it would appear. Predictably one supposes, Mr. Bin Laden criticized his former nemesis, G.W. Bush for not (giggle not here) signing the Kyoto Protocol on the regulation of carbon dioxide emissions. And he lambasted corporate influence in the U.S.

And oh dear, Osama, what're you trying to do to Obama? - condemning government bail-outs to banks...? "Discussing climate change is not an intellectual luxury but a reality", he hectored. And financial bail-outs by wealthy countries helping big industry cope with the global financial crisis only gave assistance to those who caused the meltdown."

He got that one right. You listening, President Obama? "When those perpetrators fall victims to the evil they had committed, the heads of states rush to rescue them using public money", he thundered. (Lynch them!) "We should stop using the dollar and get rid of it ... I know that there would be huge repercussions for that, but this would be the only way to free humankind from slavery ... to America and its companies."

The world's got this man wrong, obviously. He is studiously concerned with the environment, empathetic with the plight of the poor and the downtrodden, scornful of heartless capitalism; in short echoing the very points of view of U.S. President Barack Obama. Next thing we know, the American electorate, having been disappointed in Mr.Obama's initiatives, will turn elsewhere to discover hope for the future.

Is it possible Mr. Bin Laden can offer hope they can believe in? Osama, you cad, hitting a guy when he's already down!

Crime and Punishment

Legally sound, morally repugnant, according to the Supreme Court of Canada which ruled in an unanimous, 9-0 decision that the Government of Canada is in full legal compliance in its insistence on having the final word on matters relating to foreign affairs. Justice Minister Rob Nicholson took the opportunity to reiterate the government's stance of non-interference with a friendly government's handling of an enemy combatant accused of serious war crimes.

The Supreme Court justices went out of their way to ensure that government and the country at large understands that this is a legal decision. Which does not impair their apparently collective condemnation of unjustness on the part of government by withholding from Omar Khadr other legal obligations, as they see it, under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Despite the five charges levelled against accused terrorist Omar Khadr: murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, material support for terrorism and spying, the learned justices hold that his human rights as a Canadian have been neglected through the government's refusal to request his repatriation to Canada from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay.

Claiming that his charter rights were violated when Canadian government officials undertook to interrogate him at Guantanamo Bay with a view to sharing the results of that interrogation with U.S. officials. Is that not precisely what collaborating, co-operating countries do to assist one another?

Is there any question that this man represents a violent challenge to law and order, security and public safety in North America?

Sleep deprivation is cited as the torture to which Mr. Khadr was exposed, rendering him more malleable under questioning due to extreme fatigue. A maltreatment which, according to the collective wisdom of the justices constitutes a situation which "offends the most basic Canadian standards about the treatment of detained youth suspects." Yes, well it would, and it does. Under most circumstances.

This is a man who as an impressionable boy was taught by his Islamist-deranged parents to hate the very democratic institutions within Canada that gave them the freedom to live as they preferred, even while they deplored the odious rot they saw within its society and its government. The Khadrs, Islamist jihadists involved with the most extreme threats to Western stability taught their children hatred and trained them to murder those whom they hated.

The Elder Khadr, father to Omar, had no compunction about sending his teen-age son to terrorist training camps; he saw that as his children's religious obligations toward a warped version of Islam. The Western social consciousness that deplores the very idea of holding adolescents accountable for violent actions moves in sympathy with Omar Khadr.

We do, on the other hand, judge and try and impose penalties on young people who commit violent social atrocities, holding them accountable for their dreadful actions against others, while still nominally protecting them from public display and too-onerous sentences seen as an offence against their youth.

In all such instances the judgement and the sentence should fit the crime. In Mr. Khadr's instance that seems to be the case, up until now, although the final sentence is still unknown. Even "time off for good behaviour" is a possibility. And then, heaven forfend, his presence will become Canada's problem once again.

A NEW CONSENUS IS BUILDING: PEAK OIL IS BS

M&C:

The head of Saudi Aramco, the petroleum company said Thursday 'peak oil' was a fear of the past.

'The whole issue that came to the surface and created a lot of concern, peak oil, is behind us, I hope,' Khalid al-Falih, the head of Saudi Aramco, said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Fears raised in the lead up to the peak price of around 150 dollars a barrel in mid-2008, 'contributed to volatility and rise in prices.'

He saw energy consumption worldwide doubling by 2050, with 'fossil fuels, in general, still providing (the) predominate share of that energy in that time frame.'

He is 10000000% correct:

  • THE PEAK OIL PROPAGANDA IS ONE REASON THAT OIL WENT TO $150/BARREL.
  • AND $150/BARREL OIL IS ONE REASON WE HAD AN ECONOMIC MELTDOWN.
  • THE LEFT AND THE GREENIES WERE BEHIND PEAK OIL.

THEIR PROPAGANDIZING ON PEAK OIL ALONG WITH THEIR DECADES LONG PUSH FOR FEDERAL LAWS MANDATING THAT BANKS MAKE BAD MORTGAGE LOANS TO PEOPLE WITH BAD CREDIT WERE THE TWO BIGGEST REASON FOR THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN.

THAT'S ANOTHER REASON WHY, TO ACHIEVE STABLE GROWTH, WE NEED TO ERADICATE LEFTISTS AND GREENIES.

THAT MEANS DEFEATING OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS THIS NOVEMBER!

BRRRRRR!: BRRRRRRRITAIN'S COLDEST JANUARY IN 23 YEARS

METRO: Coldest January for 23 years as snow returns
Britons shivered through the coldest January for more than two decades, it has been revealed – with February getting off to a chilly and snowy start.

The average temperature last month of 1.1˚C (34˚F) was colder than for any January since 1987 – and the ninth lowest in the past 100 years, figures showed.

OBAMA IS LIKE CLEMENT ATTLEE: THE ASTUTE BLOGGERS SCOOPS INSTAPUNDIT AND PROF BAINBRIDGE BY A YEAR AND A HALF!

GLENN TONIGHT:

PROFESSOR BAINBRIDGE ON OBAMA AND THE BCS:

One day shortly after the Second World War ended, Winston Churchill and Labour Party Prime Minister Clement Attlee encountered one another at the urinal trough in the House of Common’s men’s washroom. Attlee arrived first. When Churchill arrived, he stood as far away from him as possible. Attlee said, “Feeling standoffish today, are we, Winston?” Churchill said: “That’s right. Every time you see something big, you want to nationalize it.”

I’m reminded of that story by news that President Obama plans to regulate the college football playoff system. . . . With the government already running the banks and the auto industry, and trying to take over the health care industry, however, one might have hoped that sports would escape the ravening maw of Leviathan.

But I guess Attlee and Obama are kindred spirits.

Well, let’s hope that Obama doesn’t do for America what Attlee did for Britain, though that does seem to be the goal . . . .

GREAT STORY.

ER, UM... BUT WE MADE THE COMPARISON BETWEEN OBAMA AND ATTLEE SEVERAL TIMES AS LONG AGO AS A YEAR AND HALF.

WE FREAKIN' OWN IT:

A WARNING POSTED ON JULY 20, 2008 - BEFORE THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN AND THE ELECTION:

WHAT CHURCHILL'S LOSS IN 1945 MIGHT TELL US ABOUT 2008 IN THE USA

BBC - JULY 26, 1945, (ALMOST EXACTLY 63 YEARS AGO):
Clement Attlee has been elected Britain's new prime minister after Labour won a sweeping victory in the general election.

The outgoing prime minister and great wartime leader Winston Churchill tendered hi
s resignation immediately.

The landslide victory comes as a major shock to the Conservatives following Mr Churchill's hugely successful term as Britain's war-time coalition leader, during which he mobilised and inspired courage in an entire nation.

People voted for Attlee, in spite of admiring Churchill as a hero

... Mr Attlee, 62, was welcomed by the King shortly afterwards and asked to form a new Government.

Throughout the election campaign Mr Churchill had appealed to the country to give his new National Government - formed after the dissolution of the Coalition government in May - a good majori
ty.

But the appeal was rejected by the people of Britain, largely, it is thought, because they believed Labour's promises to implement the Beveridge Report and its plans for creating a welfare state.
Tired of war, the British people thought they could take a holiday from history - again, just as they had after WW1.

Just as we did after the collapse of the USSR.

And the people who want Obama to become POTUS and CiC are animated by the same misguided, irrational and anti-historical impulses.

And the desire to have the government do for them what they should do for themselves.

The British Welfare State - like ours and like welfare states everywhere - was a failure. It diminished Great Britain and led to increased suffering. It took 30 years and Thatcher to undo it's stranglehold and save Britain from collapse.

The USA and Great Britain don't need to replay the mistakes of the past and elect Attlees or Carters or Clintons.

We don't need to take another holiday from history - not with Iran and al Qaeda still threatening the free world.

We don't need to expand the welfare state. That would just drag down the entire economy, if not the world's economy.

We don't need another Clement Attlee.

We need Reagans and Thatchers.

The closest we'll come this election is McCain - who is more like Churchill than Attlee.

CLEMENT ATTLEE OBAMA -

THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION:

PREDICTION: THE ELECTION OF AMERICA'S "CLEMENT ATTLEE" WILL BRING ON "THE OBAMA INTIFADA"

We first posted on this parallel in July, and it has come to pass: THE USA ELECTED ITS ATTLEE.

WIKI ON ATTLEE:
The government he led put in place the post-war consensus, based upon the assumption that full employment would be maintained by Keynesian policies, and that a greatly enlarged system of social services would be created -- aspirations that had been outlined in the wartime Beveridge Report. Within this context, his government undertook the nationalisation of major industries and public utilities as well as the creation of the National Health Service. After initial Conservative opposition, this settlement was by and large accepted by all parties[2] until Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party in the 1970s.
WHAT WE POSTED IN JULY 2008:
Tired of war, the British people thought they could take a holiday from history - again, just as they had after WW1.

Just as we did after the collapse of the USSR.

CLEMENT ATTLEE OBAMA -
a dove who wants to reinvigorate the welfare state
WELL... HERE WE GO AGAIN!

The socialistic policies of Attlee and Obama always have the same results.

The policy of appeasement always has the same results, too.

Socialism and appeasement will make the USA weaker and poorer - and this sends a clear signal to our adversaries.

Because weakness invites adventurism, there will be another intifada in Israel (their third), another in Europe - AND OUR FIRST IN THE USA.

THE OBAMA INTIFADA.

And Putin and Iran will become more aggressive in Venezuela.

And Putin will become more aggressive in Georgia and Ukraine.

And Iran will become more aggressive in Iraq.

And al Qaeda will become more aggressive in Pakistan and Kashmir.

And al Qaeda will attack us here again, too.

Obama will weaken our defenses by weakening our ability to gather intel by weakening the NSA Intercept Programs.

Obama will weaken us by ceasing deployment of Missile defense in Eastern Europe and Alaska.

And Obama will weaken us by cutting the defense budget.

TO AVOID THE CATASTROPHE OBAMA'S POLICIES WILL PRODUCE, WE MUST FIGHT OBAMA'S DANGEROUS POLICIES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

WE SHALL.

3/2/09 (EXCERPT):

  • OBAMA IS OUR ATTLEE.
  • WHERE IS OUR THATCHER?!

5/22/09 (EXCERPT):
THE UNBRIDLED SOCIALISM OF OBAMA
He's taken over the auto industry.

And a lot of the banking/financial industry.

And he has his eyes on the healthcare industry.

Together, they make up a BIG chunk of the economy. What... maybe 30%? Plus the federal government already is a huge part of the economy.

This explosive growth of the government is an un-American intrusion into pour businesses and is FUNDAMENTALLY anti-freemarket.

There's been nothing like it since Attlee took over from Churchill after WW2 - and nationalized about 60% of the British economy. RUINING IT FOR THREE DECADES!

VENEZUELA CONTINUES TO REAP THE FRUITS OF SOCIALISM

Chavez regime continues to do badly
Among Venezuelans, Chavez's popularity slipped below 50 percent in polls late last year.

The protest slogan "you struck out" recently appeared on banners held up during Venezuelan baseball games, which Chavez himself follows closely, and spread to signs and shirts during street demonstrations.

Last week, thousands gathered to denounce the government for yanking the anti-Chavez channel RCTV from cable television, and clashes involving riot police, government supporters and anti-Chavez students left two youths dead. Also last week, Chavez's vice president and defense minister, Ramon Carrizalez, resigned citing personal reasons.

State-imposed economic controls, meanwhile, have failed to contain 25 percent inflation, rapidly eroding the earnings of the poor who have been Chavez's core of political support.

... Latin America's worst inflation, increased blackouts, runaway violent crime and a scandal involving bankers close to his government.

... Chavez's devaluation of the currency this month - aimed at allowing the government finances to boost public spending - is expected to push prices even higher.

To counter that, Chavez deployed inspectors and soldiers to check, threatening to expropriate any businesses engaging in price-gouging. Some have been temporarily shut down. The government recently seized a French-controlled retail chain, Exito.

Chavez's foes say such measures will only further discourage private investment, which fell 7.6 percent last year amid the nationalization of banks, coffee producers and oil field service companies.

Critics also decry a banking scandal that broke in November in which several bankers with close government ties were arrested on charges of financial crimes.

Other problems weighing on Chavez include:

- A hydropower-dependent electrical grid at risk of a devastating collapse as drought pushes water levels precariously low. The government has imposed electricity rationing, but Chavez called off rolling outages in Caracas after complaints of mistakes, including power cuts to hospitals and stoplights.

- Declining output by the key oil industry caused in part, experts say, by inadequate investment and inept management.

- A crime rate so alarming that police no longer release complete murder statistics, even as Venezuelans consistently deem crime their No. 1 concern. The government reported 12,257 homicides in the first 11 months of 2009, putting Venezuela among Latin America's most violent countries.
THESE ARE THE FRUITS OF SOCIALISM. EVERYWHERE EVERY TIME. ZIMBABWE. THE USSR. NORTH KOREA. VIETNAM. CUBA. CHINA.

SO WHY IS OBAMA TRYING TO TAKE USA DOWN THAT ROAD!?

RETIRED 4-STAR GENERAL WHO WAS DNSA AND DCIA AND DEPUTY DNI SAYS OBAMA IS BLOWING IT AND MAKING US LESS SAFE

NOBODY HAS DONE MORE IN THE CLANDESTINE INTELLIGENCE ARENA OR DONE MORE TO PROTECT US THAN MICHAEL HAYDEN.

AND HE SAYS OBAMA IS BLOWING IT, BIG-TIME. THIS IS AN AUTHORITATIVE KNOCKDOWN. EXCERPTS:

Two days after his inauguration, President Obama issued an executive order that limited all interrogations by the U.S. government to the techniques authorized in the Army Field Manual. The CIA had not seen the final draft of the order, let alone been allowed to comment, before it was issued. I thought that odd since the order was less a legal document -- there was no claim that the manual exhausted the universe of lawful techniques -- than a policy one: These particular lawful techniques would be all that the country would need, at least for now.

A similar drama unfolded in April over the release of Justice Department memos that had authorized the CIA interrogation program. CIA Director Leon Panetta and several of his predecessors opposed public release of the memos in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit on the only legitimate grounds for such a stand: that the documents were legitimately still classified and their release would gravely harm national security. On this policy -- not legal -- question, the president sided with his attorney general rather than his CIA chief.

In August, seemingly again in contradiction to the president's policy of not looking backward and over the objections of the CIA, Justice pushed to release the CIA inspector general's report on the interrogation program. Then Justice decided to reopen investigations of CIA officers that had been concluded by career prosecutors years ago, even though Panetta and seven of his predecessors said that doing so would be unfair, unwarranted and harmful to the agency's current mission.

In November, Justice announced that it intended to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and several others in civilian courts for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The White House made clear that this was a Justice Department decision, which is odd because the decision was not legally compelled (other detainees are to be tried by military commissions) and the reasons given for making it (military trials could serve as a recruitment tool for al-Qaeda, harm relations with allies, etc.) were not legal but political.

... Some may celebrate that the current Justice Department's perspective on the war on terrorism has become markedly more dominant in the past year. We should probably understand the implications of that before we break out the champagne. That apparently no one recommended on Christmas Day that Abdulmutallab be handled, at least for a time, as an enemy combatant should be concerning.

... In August, the government unveiled the HIG for questioning al-Qaeda and announced that the FBI would begin questioning CIA officers about the alleged abuses in the 2004 inspector general's report. They are apparently still getting organized for the al-Qaeda interrogations. But the interrogations of CIA personnel are well underway.
THIS IS A DEVASTATING INDICTMENT OF OBAMA.

OBAMA HAS MADE US LESS SAFE BY GIVING THE ENEMY MORE RIGHTS THAN THEY DESERVE AND OUR AGENTS LESS.

WHOSE SIDE IS HE ON!?

IF OBAMA REALLY WAS A CRYPTO-MUSLIM AND RADICAL LEFTIST WHO HATED THE USA AND WANTED TO DESTROY US WOULD HE DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY?

NOPE.

TURKEY'S ISLAMIST PM IN VEILED THREAT AGAINST ISRAEL

interviewed by the Euro News television station, Erdogan said, "Israel should give some thought to what it would be like to lose a friend like Turkey in the future." He cited the recent diplomatic row over an anti-Israeli series on Turkish television, and Prime Minister BinyaminNetanyahu's remarks that he trusted French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and not Erdogan, to serve as an unbiased mediator between Israel and Syria.

ANALYSIS OF OBAMA'S SOTU: HE'S DUMBER THAN DUBYA

VIA HOT AIR:
a Smart Politics analysis of nearly 70 oral State of the Union Addresses since the mid-1930s finds the text of Obama's speech on Wednesday evening to have one of the lowest scores on the Flesch-Kincaid readability test ever recorded by a U.S. President.

The Flesch-Kincaid test is designed to assess the readability level of written text, with a formula that translates the score to a U.S. grade level. Longer sentences and sentences utilizing words with more syllables produce higher scores. Shorter sentences and sentences incorporating more monosyllabic words yield lower scores.

Smart Politics ran the Flesch-Kincaid test on each of the last 68 State of the Union Addresses that were delivered orally by presidents before a Joint Session of Congress since Franklin Roosevelt. Excluded from analysis were five written addresses (Truman in 1946 and 1953, Eisenhower in 1961, Nixon in 1973, and Carter in 1981) and two addresses that were delivered orally, but not by the President himself (Roosevelt in 1945, Eisenhower in 1956). Prior to FDR, most, but not all, such Addresses were delivered in writing.

Obama's Flesch-Kincaid grade level score of 8.8 for his first State of the Union Address was the fourth lowest score since FDR's first Address in 1934.

... As such, the speech by 'the professor' stands in contrast to his predecessor, 'the cowboy,' George W. Bush, who was frequently skewered by the left and late-night talk show hosts for his public speaking abilities, his intelligence, and his misuse of the English language.

Bush averaged a Flesch-Kincaid score of 10.4 across his seven State of the Union Addresses - or nearly two full grades higher than Obama's speech. Bush's speeches also averaged 2.4 more words per sentence than Obama, at 19.0.
OBAMA MIGHT READ A TELEPROMPTER BETTER THAN DUBYA DID, BUT OBAMA IS DUMBER THAN DUBYA.

AND IT AIN'T JUST HIS SPEAKING "SKILLS" - IT'S OBAMA'S POLICY DECISIONS: BUSH GOT GIMTO AND MILITARY TRIBUNALS RIGHT; OBAMA GOT THEM WRONG.

I MEAN, GIVING KSM AND MANHATTAN TRIAL IN FEDERAL COURT? MIRANDIZING ABDULMUTALIB ?!?!?!

THAT IS FREAKIN DUMB.

OBAMA PAINTED HIMSELF INTO ANOTHER CORNER WITH THE KSM/NYC TRIAL

Obama painted himself into a corner with Obamacare: by pushing a huge 2000 page socialistic patronage bill the public hated he guaranteed a GOP win: if it passsed the public would rebel and if it failed his base would rebel, and if it lingers he's seens as ineffective and Carteresque.

AND NOW OBAMA HAS PAINTED HIMSELF INTO ANOTHER CORNER WITH THE KSM TRAIL: by running against Gitmo and promising to close it - and then by ANNOUNCING KSM would get a federal trial in NEW YOK OF ALL PLACES (!!!!!!!) - Obama ledft no wiggle room with his base while alienating a majority of Americans.

AND IT'S GOTTEN SO BAD THAT OBAMA NOW HAS TO REVERSE COURSE AND FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TP HAVE KSM TRIED; of course, the MSM is spinning it the best they can; NYTIMES:
A top presidential adviser says the Obama administration hasn't decided where it will try professed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (HAH'-leed shayk moh-HAH'-med) and others suspected terrorists.

The administration said late last year that Mohammed and other conspirators would go on trial in a federal civilian court in New York City. But that plan has run into resistance now from city officials over costs and security measures.

White House aide David Axelrod says the administration must take into consideration such local opposition. He says no decision has been made about where a trial will take place.

WHEN SCOTT BROWN TOOK THE LEAD IN THE POLLS, I POSTED THAT THE REAL TURNING POINT FOR HUIM AND THE GOP WAS OBAMA'S KSM DECISION.

HERE IN NYC, IT WAS AN EYE-OPENING WTF-MOMENT FOR NY DEMS: THEY JUST COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

IT WAS STUPID, IT WAS SEEN AS STUPID. IT WAS THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMEL'S BACK.

Now Axelrod and Rahm and Obama are trying to salvage the mess they've made - by looking for another place to havE a trial, and by putting Obamacare on the back-burner.

IT WON'T WORK.

IT'S TOO LATE.

ONLY A SUCCESSFUL WAR WITH IRAN CAN SAVE OBAMA'S PRESDIENCY.

Europe imitating Obama's USA imitating Europe: EU UNEMPLOYMENT HITS 10%

BBC:

Unemployment in the 16 countries that use the euro hit 10% in December for the first time since the single currency was introduced in 1999.

It had been reported that the rate hit 10% in November, but this has subsequently been revised down to 9.9%.

Some 15.8 million people are now out of work in the eurozone, according to Eurostat.

Across all 27 countries that make up the EU, there are now 23 million people unemployed.

... Some 21% of under-25s in the eurozone were unemployed in December 2009, with Spain [UNDER SOCIALIST RULE SINCE 2004] suffering the highest rate of all, at 44.5%.

"Although the rise in eurozone unemployment has slowed in recent months, it still seems poised to trend higher during much, if not all, of 2010," he said.

AND THE LIBS WANT US TO BE MORE LIKE THEM!?!? Sheesh.

If socialism worked then the best countries in the world would the Cuba, the USSR, North Korea, Zimbabwe and Vietnam. Venezuela - despite having the MOST oil of any country in the world - is fast becoming a basketcase like Zimbabwe under Chavez's socialist rule.

Obama was trying to do the same thing here.

It will have the same results.

If the world wants to make poverty history it needs to make socialism history.

Chinese living standards only went up when they invited "evil" Western capitalists and industrialists INTO the country.

Maybe Europe ought to try it!

Diana regretted marrying into a German Family.

An interesting article is in this morning's Sunday Times, linked here. I hope it stems from a concern over our loss of self-governance rather than an urge to increase sales through reference to the Princess and therefore contributed the following comment:

The question of the place of birth or deemed nationality of Britain's (and even earlier England's) monarch was never of great importance as the country became a constitutional monarchy and democratic nation state.

Now such has ceased to be the case, the manner and method by which this disaster has been allowed to transpire makes the apparent similarity between the nationality of the Royals and our new senior ruling power a burning issue for the future.

The fact that the EU now rules the nation through the exercise of the Royal Prerogative in the EU Council I hope is the main underlying reason for this article appearing today.

deficits and the great recession: Krugman

The nature of America's troubles is easy to state.
We're in the aftermath of a severe financial crisis,
which has led to mass job destruction. The only thing
that's keeping us from sliding into a second Great
Depression is deficit spending. And right now we need
more of that deficit spending because millions of
American lives are being blighted by high unemployment,
and the government should be doing everything it can to
bring unemployment down.

In the long run, however, even the U.S. government has
to pay its way. And the long-run budget outlook was
dire even before the recent surge in the deficit,
mainly because of inexorably rising health care costs.
Looking ahead, we're going to have to find a way to run
smaller, not larger, deficits.

Paul Krugman.

RIFQA BARY'S PARENTS RENEGE ON DEAL

I should've known this was going to happen. The disgusting parents and their CAIR-appointed attorney are doubling-back on the deal that was initally made.

Reading this makes me wonder: is the "lawyer", Omar Tarazi, being indicted for his role in the mail-tampering and fund-stealing case that Brian Smith was behind as well? And should he still be allowed to have any part in this?

On The World Stage

Canada a stooge of the United States? An avidly dedicated follower, highly dependent for its economic, political and social well-being on the good auspices of their neighbour? To the first a hearty guffaw (and a bit of equivocation due to trade realities), to the second a hesitant but needful assent; in some measure; uncertain for the first index, a modest dissent for the following two.

Addressing the World Economic forum at Davos, Switzerland, Prime Minister Harper admonished that during summits in Canada of the G8 and G20 leaders "the discussion should be less about new agreements than accountability for existing ones." Resisting the badly battered U.S. administration's healing nostrums for its financial ills.

And hearking back to an earlier, inadequately addressed and woefully unfulfilled agenda item, Mr.Harper warned that Canada will be focusing the upcoming G8 meeting it will be hosting on maternal and child health in developing countries, stressing the grim reality that 9-million children die before they reach the age of five.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, tasked with co-chairing aid for Haiti with his Republican successor had high words of praise for Canada's Haiti-earthquake relief efforts. "It has been unbelievable. I'll bet you on a per-capita basis, they're No.1 in the world now in helping Haiti." (I'll bet he's right.)

"Probably because of the prime minister's matching grant program but, for whatever reason, the Canadians have all given money and all want to support it. You should be very proud of that. I'm very grateful", he said. "It's super that you've got that out there early so everybody's thinking about it", Bill Gates contratulated Stephen Harper.

Given Mr. Gates's monumental investments through his charitable foundation in world health, with a focus on helping children in Third World countries live into and beyond infancy, this represents recognition from a dedicated sponsor of world good. International acclaim and national disinterest.

(For although Canadians, appreciative of their prime minister's swift decision-making and action on the Haiti file, and they do take pride in the alacrity and generosity of the response, they give no credit to government in terms of popular political support.)

And in the wake of U.S. President Obama's unveiling of new rules for U.S. banks in an obvious partisan-political attempt to redeem himself in the re-election prospects of the vast American public which had voted in a new era only to find itself mired in the old one, international markets reacted negatively. With fears that banks' reactions might halt recession-recovery.

As the sole G-8 nation whose banks hadn't faltered during the massive global recession, and from the perspective of a country whom that recession touched with relatively minimal misfortune without maiming early prospects for recovery Mr. Harper took exception to the quaint notion that the G-20 - which had earlier pledged conformity in reforming the global financial system - would or should follow suit.

"Through the Group of 20, we will be encouraging strengthened financial sector regulation, and improved co-ordination between regulars. But Canada will not go down the path of excessive, arbitrary or punitive regulation of its financial sector", he cautioned. Adding aptly that "the consequences could actually be worse than before the crisis", without a global approach.

So then, might the American administration be prepared to think again about how these now proposals will affect the larger financial, global community? It was, after all, U.S. financial institutions and their ill-advised, worthless monetary papers with insubstantial credit back-up and dubious-to-absent assets that produced those dread repercussions around the world.

It makes no sense that an administration that reacted with giant stimulus programs - to benefit the wealthy, the industrialists, the financiers who then turned around and pampered themselves excessively while managing somehow to post huge surpluses - suddenly discovered the white-hot anger of the unemployed, the homeless and the socially-politically disaffected.

Back to the drawing board to address a real need to achieve a global consensus on financial regulations, but one geared to address a global issue, not a national political stale-mate. Perhaps a closer look at Canada's example, one enthusiastically endorsed and admired a year earlier, when Canada remained afloat while her partners began to sink under huge, destabilizing debt issues.

Canada, trumpeted Mr.Harper, has a "well-regulated, free-market economy with a private financial sector of enormous strength", whose banks rarely signed on to the irregular high-risk mortgage loans that U.S. lenders did, heedlessly sending worthless paper that no one could quite understand, onto the international market.

"We intend to build on that advantage. We intend to see the financial sector in Canada grow." Imagine, luring international finance to Canada's securely conservative system, edging away from the laissez-faire American tradition that failed government oversight.

THE BEST WAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP IMPROVE THE ECONOMY IS TO GET OUT OF THE EFFIN WAY!

PEOPLE WORKING HARD TO BETTER THEIR LIVES AND THE LKIVES OF THEIR FAMILIES IS THE ONLY ENGINE OF GROWTH IN THE ECONOMY.

THE GOVERNMENT''S MOST POWERFUL TOOL TO SPUR GROWTH IS ALSO THE MOST DIMPLE: AN ACROSS THE BOARD TAX CUT.

IT'D BE LIKE GIVING EVERYONE A RAISE.

CUT EVERY ALL SPENDING BY 5% AND CUT ALL TAXES BY 5%.

IT'S DEFICIT NEUTRAL.

THE ECONOMY WILL RISE IMMEDIATELY AND FOR A SUSTAINED PERIOD OF TIME.

THAT WILL REDUCE THE DEFICIT.

FLASHPOINT IRAN: USA ACCELERATING DEPLOYMENT OF MISSILE DEFENSES IN THE GULF

IHT/NYT:
The Obama administration is accelerating the deployment of a series of new defenses against possible Iranian missile attacks in the Persian Gulf, placing special ships off the Iranian coast and antimissile systems in at least four Arab countries, according to administration and military officials.

The deployments come at a critical turning point in President Obama’s dealings with Iran’s leadership, when he is warning that his diplomatic outreach will now be combined with the “consequences,” as he put it in the State of the Union address, of the country’s continued defiance on its nuclear program. The administration is trying to win broad international consensus for sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Western nations say controls the military side of the nuclear program.

As part of that effort, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton publicly warned China on Friday that its opposition to sanctions was shortsighted. The Senate, meanwhile, last week unanimously approved a resolution authorizing sanctions that include cutting off gasoline to Iran, a step Mr. Obama’s aides say he is reluctant to take.

The deployments are partly intended to address American concerns about possible retaliation for whatever sanctions are imposed. The administration is also trying to demonstrate to Israel that there is no immediate need for military strikes against Iranian nuclear and missile facilities.
RIGHT ON CUE.

I THINK THERE'S A 50-50 CHANCE THE USA OR ISRAEL WILL PREEMPTIVELY ATTACK IRAN BY THE END OF FEBRUARY.

RAHM MIGHT WANT OBAMA TO DO IT CLOSER TO THE ELECTION.

OBAMA'S "PRIORITIES" - THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOWL SYSTEM

From Sports Illustrated:
The Obama administration is considering several steps that would review the legality of the controversial Bowl Championship Series, the Justice Department said in a letter Friday to a senator who had asked for an antitrust review.

In the letter to Sen. Orrin Hatch, obtained by The Associated Press, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich wrote that the Justice Department is reviewing Hatch's request and other materials to determine whether to open an investigation into whether the BCS violates antitrust laws.

"Importantly, and in addition, the administration also is exploring other options that might be available to address concerns with the college football postseason," Weich wrote, including asking the Federal Trade Commission to review the legality of the BCS under consumer protection laws.
This action suggests a mind idled and addled by the failure, and resulting inertia, of his first year in office.

This may turn out to be Obama's Killer Rabbit moment.

Americans are not going to take too kindly to this insane step during the worst recession since the 1930's.
